Mike's Hard Commercial

Hey all, and happy Thursday! We've got something special for you today, and all we had to do was sell out (about damn time, right?). You see, Bryan reached out to Mike's Hard Lemonade recently and they asked him to draw them a comic about what it's like to have Mike's for the first time. Like the classy gent he is, he submitted this.

A timeless masterpiece, I know. But they paid him for it. Like, real paper money.

And that wasn't all. They asked the two of us to enter a contest they were holding for a select group of about 40-50 creative minds. Basically, we all had about one hour to shoot a commercial for Mike's Hard Lemonade and send it to them (to add to the challenge/spontaneity), and from there they would vote on all of the videos. The winner would get a decent chunk of change and their ideas could be used in a future Mike's commercial.

Well... we submitted a commercial. And we won first place!

So without further ado, we present you with the winning entry in the 2013 Mike's Hard Lemonade make-your-own-commercial contest. And please, please keep in mind that as mentioned we had only about 1 hour to work on this, so most shots were done in one take and this is far from refined.

So remember, kids, if you see a commercial in the near future starring Dr. McParty and Frightened Homeowner, you know whose demented brains birthed it.

Cheers and stay classy, friends,
-B&B

Music: City and Colour (represent, bitches!)
Beer: Left Hand Black Jack Porter (sorry Mike, the contest was fun but we'll always be beer guys)

  1. The multiple sunglasses make it! And it comes in light? Cool. In five or six cases, I'll be positively svelte.

  2. It truly is a timeless masterpiece deserving of real paper money...or at least it appears that way after drinking down a number (which at this point I have lost track of) Mike's product. The light version, of course.

To be clear...are the people over at Mike's Hard Lemonade just sitting around reading blogs and drinking away the profits saying things like.."Let's save our advertising dollars by using bloggers to do our commercials instead of really expensive firms like Donny Deutsch's advertising? (added bonus is they don't have to deal with Donny Deutsch as he appears to be a jackass)

    1. It wasn't just bloggers who entered the contest, but either way, I'm pretty sure we're much, much cheaper than Donny Deutsch's agency. So if they get a stellar commercial out of it, awesome. If not, they're not out much money. Much money for them anyway.

  3. I watched the commercial and that was absolutely brilliant. You're being robbed of your discomfort and punching the sun. I want some Hard Lemonade now and I'm not a big fan of lemonade or beer. Congratulations on winning the prize too.

  4. Holy crap I'm so insanely happy for the pair of you right now. Congrats on the big win!! The double sunglasses and melting fat was the shit- although jumping off the roof and the punch at the end were brilliant as well. Awesome job guys!

    2. Did you ever think of training and/or trying out for the show, American Ninja Warrior? For once, I'm actually not joking.. You are not shy in front of the camera and I know you've been trained in martial arts. The show is filming in Denver right now-I think you should go check it out :)

  5. Like punching the sun!

Congratulations and it was so artsy and wordy..like full of artsy words!!!

  7. City And Colour: Excellent shirt choice. Anyway, that commercial was brilliant! You guys have my uninfluential vote!

  8. Woot woot! Congratulations boys-well done and I do hope they make your commercial. Now that would be the dogs bollocks.

  9. Congrats! Your commercial is brilliant! They should just run it "as is" for the maximum ironic effect.

  10. Now I want to do a commercial that requires downing a bunch of alcohol! And get paid for it too!

What a brilliant piece of work!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think the only reason I've been free from alcohol is that they've never mixed it with Dr. Pepper (in a actual product anyway).

  12. haha real paper money can't be beat, as long as it isn't monopoly money. Of course could buy boardwalk

Awesome commercial, best part was the dull sunglasses, classic.

  13. The sunglasses moment was awesome, but it probably only needed to be done once. Improbable eloquence was nice. "Only of your discomfort," "Mike's is hard, like punching the sun in the face," and "I'm practically dieting right now!" are my favorite quotes. It would have benefited from tighter editing, camera zooms and soundtrack, but you probably already knew that. Though I haven't seen seen any other contributions, it appears that you guys definitely deserve first place.Congratulations Brandon and Brian, you are officially professional marketers!

    1. Thanks for the kind words! You won't hear any arguments from us about improving it, but for having only a single hour to work on it, I'd say we came up with something pretty decent.

  14. That's commercial is awesome. "punch the sun in the face" - punch dialogue. So no surprise that you got first prize. The sun now has cloud over its head after that punch for sure.
Pretty good one, BB on their way to stardom and not exactly sundom :)

  15. BEER BOYS ~
    Congratulations!

I loved the sunglasses bit and the classic slogan, "It's like punching the Sun in the face." Believe me, that would be a popular slogan here in Phoenix.

I was certain that someday I'd be able to say, "I knew them when... they promoted only good BEER."

Don't worry about it, just "take the money and run". There'll be plenty of time to revert to Beer Snob Idealism when you're waxing the 120 classic cars stored in your Bank One Ballpark-sized automobile garage. (That is unless it's James' job to wax the marvelous machines.)

    3. I like drinking tons of Mike's Hard Lemonade, because it fulfills my urge for alcoholism and diabetes all in one fell swoop.

And unfortunately the winnings weren't enough to hire James the butler to wax my 120 classic cars, but it IS enough to pay Boxcar Jimmy to wash the windshield of my 1 "classic" car with a bottle of water and an old newspaper. Really gotta make that 1995 Ford Taurus shine when you're rolling around town looking important...

Oh, and I tried to take the money and run, but I paid too much in taxes. Unfortunately, that's just what the facts is. Really, there's no justice.

  16. I'm currently drinking soft lemonade and I feel ashamed, I want it hard but you two while it's a great ad will be replaced by Clooney and Pitt!

  17. That was pretty awesome. Congratulations! You guys are like the next Wieden and Kennedy. Coincidentally, a couple of hot nights ago I had my first Mikes Hard lemonade frozen. And it was after biking home from work for 7 miles in the heat. It WAS like punching the sun. And drinking candy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. All that in an hour... including download? Nice job! I'd love to add to this, but everyone hit the best highlights. How about... "nice cameo by whoever played "the sun" ?"

  20. Oh yes, this is a worthg winner, and I say that without seeing the other participants. Well done guys, hope you blow that hard earned money on something worthwhile, like Mike's Hard Lemonade.

  21. Well, I see one "creative mind" between the two of you.

    Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  22. 'Golly Gee Wilikers' - Holy Carp, that's some creative writing! Remember when I said I wanted front row seats to the Broadway opening - well I'm reminding ya now, cause it won't be long.

Oh and 'selling out' is a relative term, I see this as more like 'selling off'.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL That was awesome.
And, Brandon, my daughter says, "I like the guy with the sunglasses." But you stay away from her; she's 10. :P

    1. We both had sunglasses at one point or another in the clip, and that was Bryan who wore them the most/had the sunglasses gag.

Either way, rest assured we are BOTH planning to stay away from your 10 year old daughter.

    2. Oh, bah, that is you in the chair. heh The sunglasses threw me. I'm so bad with sunglasses on people's faces that I almost understand the whole Superman thing. I mean, I ran into my sister-in-law coming out of Target once, but she was wearing giant sunglasses, and I almost didn't recognize her.
Okay, Bryan, my daughter loved the sunglasses thing.

  24. You nailed it with the "light" version, good job. Punching the sun in the face gave me a good laugh, too. No wonder you guys got first place! (And I got to see your real, honest faces, oh my. /blush)

  25. Mike's Hard Lemonade is pretty good stuff. Maybe you could change your site name to "A Lemonade for the Shower." Think of all the urination fetish traffic you'd get!

  27. Man, I haven't been here in forever. Missed you guys.

Your commercial is hilarious. So is the comic.

Unfortunately, alcoholics like me can't get drunk off Mike's Hard Lemonade. Fortunately, they make Mike's HARDER Lemonade too!

    (I'm not kidding)

    1. I don't think we could get drunk off of Mike's either. Not that either of us has tried. That sounds like SO much sugary lemonade. I'm sick just thinking about it.

  29. You get my vote for commercial of the year. I see it playing the the Superbowl's half time, don't they give out oscars for commercials? If they don't, they should. I am in awe of your talent and ability to make a buck, how about Brandon and Bryan for president? Ok, better stop drinking that delicious hard lemonade...but I can't put it down, cause it comes in lite too....:)

  30. I probably should not have watched this in the office-I was laughing out loud.

I actually find Mike's to be a good choice in the summer, but since Stephen T. McCarthy already makes fun of me for sometimes drinking Lite Beer from Miller, I guess he can add this to the list of why he revoked my Man Card.

Now I know what it feels like to be part of an entourage...Please say it's okay for me to be part of your entourage, if only in an online capacity.

  38. The fact that you did this, got paid for it, and won, is amazing. I aspire to achieve this level of, whatever it is. I can only imagine what it be like with actual editing.

Now I feel like a hard lemonade.

  39. Wow you slapped that together perfectly, especially for the time you had. Congrats on the win

  42. Damn that was awesome. You guys are way too skinny. You should lay off the diet hard lite lemonade things and get some Porter in your belly! Black cherry is my favorite by the way.

  43. I love you guys! You had me chuckling and wanting to go out and buy some Mike's Hard Lemonade right now! And it's not even 9:00 a.m.!!

Where do I begin? The comic strip was great. The two of them riding off in the sunset was my favorite panel. But the commercial was hysterical. The multiple sunglasses was awesome. Very clever. The disappearing belly made me giggle and so did the sound effects. But, I think the two of you with your thumbs up and the pink fanny pack just holds a special place in my heart. ha ha!!

    Great job, guys. Congratulations!!!

  47. That was fantastic! I love the "girlish figure" part. It's awesome, if you can do that in an hour, you both belong in Hollywood. I totally want to share this!

  52. I just laughed so hard that I started crying. If I don't see this commercial, I will cry for an entirely different reason. This is, by far, the best commercial ever and I want to be able to look at the tv, point, and scream "I KNOW THE GUYS WHO MADE THAT COMMERCIAL". Especially if its in a public place.

How did you keep straight faces though?

  53. I REALLY hope that I get the chance to see this ad air on T.V. before I head back to France-land next month. It'll make my day if it airs while I watch South Park. :)

  54. I loved/am extremely jealous of your success. But even more importantly, Sweetie, my wife, watched your commercial, and she laughed at it. Sweetie is VERY hard to make laugh. I know this from experience. I have told her joke after joke after joke and she has never laughed at all. Some would say this is because my jokes are not funny. Those people are mean. Why would they say that? It's not like I was doing anything to bug them. I like my jokes. Leave me alone.
